Traditions are fun. We like them. Start them often. Banana pancakes and Jack Johnson dance marathons on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Movies and popcorn on Friday. Good times.
Mike likes to buy movies that he and Maddie can watch together. It's their thing. Enter in Pixar and all of their wonderful cartoon movie options that serve to entertain the wee and the tall. Enter in Nemo and the quest to find this small fish. Finding Nemo was the first movie Mike ever bought Maddie and the only movie that Maddie knows by name and the only movie that she currently wants to watch. Every. Single. Day. Has he bought other movies? Yes. Watched them with her? Yes. But what about other Pixar movies? Yes. Yes. And yes. Believe me we are open to suggestions on this one. What is it about that tiny little clown fish? I don't know that we will ever know what she sees in him or why she is drawn to him. But what's clear is that there will be plenty of opportunities to find out. I'm seriously not kidding about the every single day. As I type this the credits are rolling on my TV screen.
Let me stop right now - to tell you what Mike is itching to tell each and every one of you. I fast forward through the scary parts. Yes, you read that correctly. I do. I fast forward through the first part of the movie when the big bad barracuda eats all of Nemo's brothers and sisters. Yes, it's scary. Clearly you haven't seen Nemo in a long time and you are overdue for a visit at the McCormack household. In my defense, I blame my own mother (also known affectionately in our family as Tinkerbell) and every one of the G rated movies she rented for us. I can't tolerate violence on any level and my definition of scary is vastly different than anyone else I know. So there - I said it. I'm a weeny. I get it and I own it.
Back to the present day predicament.
We now have a clearly defined system of editing any future video purchases. Can we make it through the movie once? That's an easy one. Can we make it through 100 times? Slimmer selections. Can we Nemo it? Survive constant whining and begging to watch it every other day? Few movies make it through this process folks. Those of you having fun thinking about future DVDs that might land in Maddie's Christmas stocking. Let me warn you - between Mike and I we can come up with some sick payback schemes. There will be no Little Mermaids or anything remotely similiar in my household - for real.
Wondering who Momo is? Momo is Nemo - at least that was Maddie calls him. Daddy and Mommy have a few other choice words for him that will intentionally not be mentioned - at least not here.

Maddie - 1, Door to Door Salesman - 0
If you have to go pee, go now. That's right, stop reading this and go pee. If you think you might have to pee anytime in the next few minutes, go ahead and do it now. If all this talking and thinking about going pee, makes you think you might need to go, go now. Because I have the funniest story ever to tell you. It involves Maddie and the poor door to door alarm salesman that visited my house this evening. I'm not even kidding, go pee now.
Somewhere out there tonight that alarm salesman is sitting at bar, drinking a beer, a free beer. I'm guessing he probably paid for the first beer, but after he started re-hashing the details of a story I'm getting ready to tell you, if the bartender had any heart at all, the other beers have all been free of charge.
Did you pee yet?
As I was unloading Maddie and our things out of the car this afternoon a door to door salesman approached us. I noted by his shirt and his badge that he was with APX alarm systems and for the first time in my life, I was actually interested in what he had to say. We just learned today that there have been a couple of break-ins in our neighborhood (Mama - put down the phone and keep reading) and with all of the traveling that Mike does we decided today that we need to look into an alarm system for the house. I'm sure this guy was thinking he had hit the jackpot. Poor sap.
He started his speech as we stood on our front porch, while I tried to unlock and open the door and while Annie barked at him through the glass as though she might rip his head off as soon as I opened the door. And on cue, as soon as I opened the door he stopped mid-sentence and held his breath. You all know what happened next - Annie proceeded to lick him to death. And much to his satisfaction and relief the sales pitch was on again.
I put Maddie down and tried to arrange our things. He continued his pitch and we both started to sweat. Have you been outside lately? It's hot as Havana out there and we live in NC - not Cuba or South America. So I did the number ONE thing you are not suppose to do.....I invited him inside.
NOW - all parents and otherwise concerned adults (husbands in Canada & bffs included) reading this story thinking that I have officially lost my mind - need to know this. I could have taken him down faster than a wet noodle. He weighted all of 115 pounds, 5 of which he lost in a sweat pool standing there on my front door. And if I had passed out from the sweltering heat - he could have kidnapped Maddie. Although I'm not sure he could have taken her on either. So - we were all good folks. Plus I think he was from somewhere wholesome like Minnesota or something. They grow good people, right?
Anyway - crazy or not - I let him in. We went into the kitchen to talk security alarms and as soon as we sat down around the kitchen island my daughter turned into a vicious salesman attacker. From the moment he tried to say hello to her - she decided he was the enemy and he was in her territory (i.e. the kitchen). She gave him an evil look folks, and then did everything possible to stop him in his tracks and make him leave.
She screamed. She cried. She through her body on the floor and kicked her legs. I'm not sure if it was because Mike is not home and she saw him as a threat or because he was taking away from the time I usually spend with her. But I'm serious. She gave him an evil look and proceed to pitch the biggest fit I have ever witnessed on her behalf. I picked her up and she screamed louder. So what did he do? He started talking louder. And she met his decibel level and then some. So he got louder. And I almost started laughing out loud. Have you ever witnessed a 16 month old and a door to door salesman go head to head? He pulled out laminated charts and she took them from him and threw them on the floor. He picked them up - she repeated. Now - I got onto her because even though I found it funny, it was rude. But there was no controlling her - she was on a mission to make this man leave, immediately. That poor man tried everything he could to make her like him and got nowhere. At one point I put her down - still screaming at this point - and she waged Winnie the Pooh in her war on the salesman. She got onto her ride on scooter, backed it up and rammed it into his chair....three times! I picked her up and told her to be nice and she looked at him and said NO!
At this point I really thought I was witnessing Satan take a hold of my daughter right in front of my eyes. I couldn't believe the way she was acting. I've never witnessed anything like it. And the poor salesman kept trying to get through his speech. Finally it got to the point where I had to tell him that while yes, I was definitely interested in protecting my home and his services sounded great - for his own protection he was going to have to come back - when my husband was home and my daughter was not.
He agreed. I've never seen a door to door salesman give in so quickly and make his way to the door so fast.
I mean don't they go through training on how to persevere in the most trying of situations and to close the deal no matter the arguments that the patrons put up? Apparently, that training does not include how to overcome the wrath of a toddler because he crumbled like a cookie.
Poor guy. I have to give it to him. He signed up for round two today at 4:oo. For his sake I hope that Maddie takes a long nap this afternoon. And that he enjoyed those free beers.

Emily Post Would be Proud
Monday night Maddie woke-up in the middle of the night and I realized that she needed a diaper change. So I changed her diaper and as I was putting her pajama pants back on - she said "thank you"! I thought it was beyond cute. I couldn't help myself I picked her up and hugged her tight.
This morning I held on tight to that sweet little moment while she was throwing temper tantrum #21 of the day. Life with a toddler is definitely a give and take relationship. You take and bank the sweet moments when you can!

The Sweetest Thing
We cuddle in bed. That's our new night time routine. Don't judge, Daddy's been away on work trip for 3 weeks. She likes to run into our bedroom point to the bed and say "Up!" I help her climb into the bed, we snuggle underneath the covers and giggle. A lot. She likes to point to my eyes, nose, cheek, mouth and say the appropriate name. She is so proud of herself. Then she sticks her finger up my nose and giggles, because she thinks its funny. So do I, because how does she know that's funny?
Last night she was rustling around trying to find that one position that would help induce sleep, when she turned to me and put her mouth near my face. I was nervous because she's teething again which means that biting is always a posibility. But she kissed me. Rolled over and drifted off to sleep. Melt. My. Heart. She is her own little being. I know this but moments like this just re-affirm who she is shaping up to be and she is sweet and funny. And cranky and rough. And independent and fearless. And she is my daughter and she loves me.

Makes Me Smile
Mondays are pretty rough around our house. Everyone's exhausted and a little gloomy to be going our seperate ways - to work and to school.
Today was different. Mark this down as a Monday not to forget.
Today, this little cutie pie told me that she loved me for the first time...

Yeah right - if you say so!
When Maddie was first born I signed up for weekly newsletters that detail her physical development and motors skills in relation to her age each week. Here is a sample of the one that I received today:
"Another week, another amazing development! By this age your child's balance may have improved to the point where he can stand on his own -- at least for a little while. When will he take his first genuine steps (watch what this looks like in our animated guide) if he hasn't already? It could be tomorrow -- or two months from now. The age range for walking is huge: Most experts consider anything between nine and 18 months totally normal."
So what does it mean if she started taking steps at 7 months? It must mean that our child is not normal! Seriously, I don't give these things much cred, but it makes for a good laugh from time to time.
Now this next part of the article - well, they couldn't be more right about this:
"As your baby grows older and more independent, it's natural for your emotions to shift too. Many moms experience some he's-no-longer-a-baby-blues as that first birthday approaches."
For this, I am using the following coping method: DENIAL. DENIAL. DENIAL. (rinse & repeat)

Intoxicating
One of my nearest and dearest friends gave birth to her first child this weekend. A son who they named Joseph. I think most of you have met her - Chris was one of my college roommates and the matron of honor in our wedding. Her husband's name is Mike and we could not be more excited for the two of them. It's such an incredible time in your life - these first few days as a family and it only gets better. Yesterday I talked to her for a few minutes and you could just here the joy in her voice. Instantly it made me think about the day that Maddie was born and holding her in my arms the first time. Looking her over a million times and soaking in all those teeny tiny parts we had waited so long to see. Smelling her tiny head - we all do that don't we? Maybe it's just me, but I still love to rub my cheek up against her sweet head and smell her tiny noggin. The whole time I was talking to Chris I was trying to put all those memories and thoughts into words - but you just can't. I couldn't find the right word, but later it came to me. It's intoxicating. The whole experience. Start to finish. And the good news is - it still is.
Congratulations Chris and Mike -welcome to the best thing that ever happened to you! You are going to love the whole ride!

From Where I'm Sitting
I wish you could see the view from where I'm sitting. Mike sat down earlier in our rocking chair in the living room to rock Maddie to sleep and within a few minutes they both fell asleep. She started out in his arms but once she finished her bottle, she turned and put her head on his chest.
It's been a rough week at our house. Maddie came down with the stomach virus and we almost ended up in the ER. Scared us to death. Then Mommy and Daddy both got it. It's no fun for anyone involved when you can hardly take care of each other, much less chase after a 10 month old who doesn't understand why her parents haven't moved from the same spot all day. Mandy dropped off sick supplies at our front door - the usual pedialyte, gatorade and soup - we were too afraid to let her in and chance infecting her too. We didn't make it to school or work until Wednesday. Well, Mike made it into work on Tuesday, Mommy and Maddie did not. Since then we've been trying to get our heads above water. Catch up on laundry, catch on cleaning, and catch up at work. Couple that with bad news I got at work. It's been a struggle this week. There have been days this week when we just wanted to crawl back into bed and forget everything that happened that day.
Tonight was finally a normal night and everyone was well. Before they fell asleep, we ordered pizza and stripped Maddie down to her diaper so that she could "feed" herself. She likes to peel the cheese off the pizza and eat it. Annie gets her crust. Afterwards, Maddie got a bath and came downstairs to play for awhile. Mike tried to teach Maddie how to throw a ball, a beach ball, and then throw things at the ball, all in the house. Lovely. Maddie is a fast learner. Even better. And then they settled down for bottle and night time. Did I mention earlier that Mike fell asleep first?
Saturday morning Mike leaves for Pebble Beach and his busy travel season starts back up. Watching them play together tonight I know that Maddie is going to notice his absence this time - which is bittersweet. He is going to miss her more than ever. I don't really know if she is truly a Daddy's girl or a Mommy's girl at this point - she seems to play her hand quite well with both of us - but I know that she will miss the weird laugh he does lately that makes her giggle and eating breakfast with Daddy every morning while Mommy trys to steal a few more zzz's, and many other little routines they share. There are lots of things that I will miss about having Mike at home with us all of the time and nights like tonight are definitely one of them. This week has been insane and Saturday the craziness will all start up again. But tonight I get to enjoy the view.

The Circus is coming to town!
In two months, our baby girl will be 1 year old. I am so not kidding when I tell you that if I dwell on this notion too long I feel like I'm going to have an anxiety attack. A full fledge attack, because you know if one year can go by this quickly next year she will be 18 and she'll be enrolling in college in Alaska, where I can't get to her if she needs me. What if she gets the flu - who will make her homemade soup? And besides the fact that it is light years away, do you know how cold it is there? What if she wants to marry an eskimo? Then she'll never back home!! Her little cheeks get windburn here - she can't move to Alaska! I wish I could tell you that my irrational thought trail ends there - but there is SO. MUCH. MORE. that follows, you don't even want to know. Let's just say it pushes me over the edge and leave it at that.
I've found the best coping method is to delve deep into party planning mode. You know - the party I said I wasn't going to throw. Well it's on - because if I don't do something to divert my attention I'm going to end up even crazier and seriously, who really wants that to happen?
So after researching themes and party planning blogs, Mike and I have decided that Maddie's first birthday party will be all about the Circus! She loves animals - loves books about them, playing with stuffed animals and of course the real thing - Annie! And she loves to entertain - so it's a perfect match! The party will be held on Saturday, March 27th. We will send out invites later - but wanted to tell you now so that you can mark your calendars if you would like to join us. Plus, if you have any cool cirus party ideas - we'd love to hear them!
Come one, come all! Step right up.....(can't you just see it now)...

Calling All Family Photographers!
I'm going to start working on a slideshow for Maddie's first birthday (why does my heart race with panic everytime I say that out loud???). I would love it if you would go through your photos and pick out your favorites of Maddie - shot of her solo and with others. If you could send them to me via email or on a CD I would be forever grateful. We have a ton of pics - but I would love to see & include some of your favorites as well. Thanks!
Pointing and Waving!
I really do have to get back to blogging about our little one on a regular basis. This blog has really served as our baby book for Maddie. If someone has some extra time to spare - send it my way please. I could sure use it.
Over the holidays Maddie found her pointer finger and is now pointing at everything and everyone. It's really cute to watch her talk and then she really gets going and starts pointing her finger for effect. Love. It.
This weekend we tried out the webcams that we gave both sets of grandparents for Christmas. So cool and so much fun. It makes the distance seem a little shorter when you can see the person you are talking with. Maddie was certainly excited to see everyone - but lost interest fairly quickly. We will have to work on her attention span with the video chats, but she did break out a new milestone - she started waving hello! We were just as shocked as the grandparents on the receiving end of her new trick. She is growing up so very fast.
A friend asked me this weekend if I missed the days when she was itty-bitty and I told her that there are times when you do, but every developmental step is so much fun that I find myself thinking "____ was fun, but this is even better!" It's just amazing how much your heart grows with every step she takes or evey day that passes. I thought I loved her more than I could ever love her on the day she was born - or anyone else for that matter, but now it seems like it's just not even comparable.
